When people started moving into Stevenage
New town, there was a need for a community building in Bedwell, this was provided with a temporary prefabricated building in Monkswood.
Then in 1956/57 the Stevenage Development corporation started building a community centre in Bedwell. This was run by a voluntary committee, who in turn, appointed a manager and staff to run the centre. The centre was opened by the Queen in April 1959.
